International Day of Girl child is recognized by United Nations and is observed every year on October 11 globally. It is celebrated with the objective to spread awareness regarding gender equality and the problems encountered by girls in their day to-day-lives.
This year’s celebration marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl (IDG). The last 10 years has been of impact as there is increased attention on issues that matter to girls that’s governments, policy makers and general public. More opportunities for girls to have their voices heard nationally and even globally have increased.
International Day of the Girl Child focuses attention on the need to address the challenge girls’ face and to promote their empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. The day also draws awareness to the gender inequality that girls confront all around the world. On this day, UN and other organizations host conferences and discussions on a variety of topics including child marriage, violence against women, access to education and more. The day also hopes to motivate girls to reach their great potential by sharing their stories of change.
The theme of International Day of the Girl Child this year is “Our time is now- our rights, our future.”
This day therefore is of significance as it motivates girls to do more, believe in themselves and aim higher.
