Residents of Shangalamwe-Matunda area in Nabiswa Ward, Kiminini Sub County have urged political leaders to honour their promises on infrastructural development which was recognized as one of the main agenda in their manifesto during political campaigns. They said this due to lack of a water point in the area, a condition that forced them to call on the County government of Trans Nzoia to come in and save the situation.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, a group of residents led by the village elder Nicodemus Wafula complained about lack of a water point in the area for a long period and lamented over walking up to a distance of 2 kilometers in search of water on a daily basis. They said that the situation is hindering the smoothness of life in that area as they emphasize on the need of having a water point they can rely on.
They have also asked Nabiswa Member of County Assembly, Martin Jemanuru and Kiminini Member of Parliament, Maurice Kakai Bisau to listen to their plea and come up with a lasting solution to the issue that has become a thorn in the flesh of Shangalamwe residents.
They further claimed that water scarcity in the area has affected small scale farming and other agricultural activities since the available water is only used for domestic purposes, and most farmers opt not to use it in the irrigation of short seasoned crops to increase food supply in the area.
They finally blamed the mess as the root cause of most domestic violence in the area, by claiming that family members are constantly fighting over the usage of the water they struggle to get and some of them have taken it to an extent of breaking up marriages and family reunions.
They therefore, urge the County government of Trans Nzoia under the leadership of George Natembeya to aptly act by giving directives to the department of Water and Sanitation in the County to come up and settle the issue.
