Four people have been confirmed dead while others sustained serious injuries following a Sunday morning accident that involved a Nissan Matatu and a sugarcane tractor at Musembe along Eldoret-Webuye highway in Lugari Sub-County.
The accident occurred after the North Rift Sacco Matatu driver who was on his way from Bungoma heading to Nairobi lost control and rammed into the tractor that had stopped on the road to pick cane loaders in the 5:45 am incident.
Three matatu passengers died on the spot while one died on the way to the hospital. Other ten passengers including the matatu driver are nursing serious injuries at Lumakanda and Webuye County hospitals.
Residents criticized police officers who arrived at the scene later for refusing to rush the injured to the hospital, claiming that they had no fuel.
The accident happened at the same spot where eight people died after a matatu hit a truck from the back last year while the residents were calling for bumps to be placed in the area to help reduce frequent accidents in the area.
“Last year we lost eight people at this scene after a Nairobi bound Matatu rammed into an immobile truck,” said Mr. Jackson Ananda adding the area was a hotspot.
The bodies were taken to Kimbilio Funeral home.
