27 officers from various institutions in the country have been suspended pending investigations over the release of condemned sugar.
President William Ruto through a press release by the Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei listed 27 officers from Kenya Bureau of Standards, Kenya Revenue Authority, Agriculture and Food Authority, National Police Service and Directorate of Criminal Investigation.
Those suspended at KEBS include; Lt. Col (Rtd) Benard Njiraini (the Managing Director), Dr. Geoffrey Muriira, Director Quality Assurance and Inspection, Hilda Keror, Manager Inspection, Mombasa Port Office, Liston Lagat, Assistant Manager, ICDN Nairobi,Rono Birgen Chief Manager, ICDN Nairobi, Stephen Owuor, Principal Officer and Peter Olima Joseph – Inspector, Mombasa
At KRA suspended officers include; Joseph Kaguru, Mwanja Masinde, Stephen Muiruri, Moses Okoth, Doris Mutembei, Chacha Hondo, Carol Nyagechi and Derick Kago.
Those suspended at National Police Service are; George Mithamo and Joel Kirui while those affected at the DCI are Benard Ngumbi and Raphael Mwaka.
At Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) are; Oscar Kai, Patrick Magut. Joseph Malta Mweni (Port Health), Isacko Bonai (NEMA), Stephen Cheruiyot (Anti-Counterfeit Agency), Daniel Ngugi (KEPHIS), Willy Koskei (EACC) and Edwin Ruto (KPA).
The condemned sugar was released to the public and had been declared unfit for human consumption in 2018, the Chief of Staff’s statement read that the sugar consignment comprising 20,000 bags of 50 kilogrammes each had been imported into the country in 2018 and condemned by the Kenya Bureau of Standards for want of expiry date specification.
