Allan Litwaka and Elvis Ochieng scored a goal each when Musingu defeated Vihiga Boys in the opening match of Western Region Secondary Schools Sports Association played on Wednesday evening at the Bukhungu stadium in Kakamega County.
In a tense match of neighbours, the kakamega based Musingu, took ‘home advantage’ with fans filling the stadium to score the opening goal in the 29th minute following a Vihiga’s defense mix-up to to give Brenden Mwinano’s lead into the first break,
After resumption, Ochieng dribbled past three defenders to score the second goal in the 67th minute to grab maximum points to take the lead in pool A.
Speaking after the match Mwinano said that winning the first match gives the team morale as they return to the region after 18 years.
“The last time we played in such championships was 18 years and a win for us has given the school a bigger chance to play at the semi finals as we seek the single slot for the national championships that will be played here,” said Mwanano.
The loser Shiraku, is optimistic that the school will recover again in the remaining matches and reach the finals.
“Losing the opening match is painful but that is not the end for us. We have two more matches to play and we shall make sure we play to the maximum,” said Shiraku.
