As a way of boosting and creating women empowerment to the society, Misikhu ward Member of County Assembly Milliah Masungo has distributed chicks to 29 women groups across the ward and planning the same for youth groups and special groups.
Addressing the groups at Makhese village in her ward in Webuye West Constituency, the MCA said her choice of the project was consultative and informed by market demand that has not been utilized well by the people given that the county slaughter house located at Chwele has been lacking chicken due to scarcity.
She said chicken rearing should be taken to another level of being an important income generating activity to help many households and fast growing project that if it’s well taken care of it can be among the best activity that can boost the economy of a community given that there is ready market for the same in and outside Bungoma County.
She appealed to the groups to take good care of the chicks and make sure that they are well kept in a good environment and provided with enough feeds that will help them grow faster and attain good weight for commercial consumption.
“As I give you these chicks I want to request you to take good care of them by providing enough feeds and have given them across the ward and my office will be on the watch to see how you are taking care of them, my aim is to upgrade our economic status and chicken rearing has a quick impact as it doesn’t require a lot of space and anyone can do it alongside other projects and because women have a lot of time at home this project is good for you,” said Hon. Masungo.
She also provided feeds for the chicks for the groups to begin with as they plan to get more and added that she will get livestock officers who will be visiting them time to time to advise them on how to maintain the chicks and which feeds to be given at what stage.
Some group leaders appreciated the project saying it touches them so much and they chose it because they have knowledge of taking care of them and any other information is just an additional and they welcome the livestock officers to support them so that they can change chicken rearing from just for consumption to commercial purposes.
“This is a nice project and it will be of help to us in future and we will be able to take care of our bills including paying fees for our children and other things and we really want to thank our able MCA for thinking about supporting women and when a woman or a wife is economically stable then the whole family is safe,” said one leader.
They vowed to support leadership that is development oriented in the forthcoming General Election.
