Three truck drivers have tested positive for the Coronavirus at Kanduyi, Bungoma County. This brings the total number of Covid-19 cases picked up in the County to 5, all truck drivers. The County’s strategic position for truck drivers heading to Uganda through the Malaba Border Point had already caused concerns, given that drivers lodge and spend their rest times at Kanduyi.
With a daily increase in Covid-19 cases in Busia, the third highest countrywide so far, attention has been drawn to truck drivers, with Health CS Mutahi Kagwe noting many drivers leave the Kenya Ports in Mombasa without Covid-19 negative certificates, endagering residents of Counties they pass through on their way to the Busia. Fellow drivers are also affected, with those having Covid-19 negative certificates forced to wait in line when they near the border points in Busia.
The two other Covid-19 patients in Bungoma were taken to Webuye Health Center where they received treatment. The first case had been picked up by health officials at one of the checkpoints at the County’s entry point on April 20th. He was exhibiting Covid-19 symptoms and was quarantined at the KMTC Webuye. He later tested positive. The second case was picked up at Bitobo road block at Kimaeti on April 30th by health officials.
