Students of Handow secondary school in Lugari sub county exercised democracy by electing their leaders in a highly contested elections held at the school.
Speaking during the exercise the school principal Mr. Sternly Muzame said the school had adopted a student friendly approach by empowering them to participate in school governance.
He said that it was not good for teachers to impose leaders on students thus need to give the chance to participate in the elections.
Mr. Muzame said this approach allows students to exercise and learn democratic principles to develop their decision making skills for a more abstemious electorate in future.
The elections which were conducted through secret ballot were held within the school premises and coordinated by teachers following the elections policies of the school and finally the votes were counted in front of the nominated contenders.
Eliud Nyongesa was elected the school president after garnering a total of 230 votes against his closest challenger Maxwel Kavai Mudaki who conceded defeat after managing a total of 114 votes.
However, following his encouraging defeat speech, Mudaki was appointed secretary to the school cabinet.
On his part Nyongesa promise to work together with all students to ensure discipline was maintained as well as improving academic standards in school.
Mr. Muzame said it was good to develop democracy from the grass root level, saying this was a great opportunity for the elected students to develop their leadership skills and emerge as great leaders in future either political or in other posts.
