351 public schools are being used as quarantine centres countrywide according to Education CS Prof. George Magoha. Some Universities are also being used as isolation centres. The news comes as Kenyans are anticipating President Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech on Saturday when he is expected to announce whether the nationwide curfew, closure of schools and places of worship and cessation of movement into and out of designated Counties will be extended.
Speaking when he received the Final Report on Proposals concerning the resumption of learning on Friday, CS Magoha said the pandemic is steadily increasing in prevalence, “As you’ve seen all over the world, no one has opened any school when the pandemic is still spiking,” he said. However, he said the final directions will be issued by President Kenyatta. He pointed out that the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has extended the lessons provided through broadcast and digital learning.
He urged parents to change their mindset and love their children, and that they should take charge of their children at home, “To protect them from sexual and drug abuse, teenage pregnancies and female genital mutilation.”
