A 36-year-old man died after being struck by lightning at Maneno village in Lumakanda location, Lugari sub county. According to Mr. Boniface Okinda his brother Nicholas Mukhwana, was covering bricks which had been baked and made when the tragedy occurred. “He had just covered the bricks heading to the house when he was struck,” said Okinda.
One of the deceased’s sister Ms. Janet Ayoti said they had just taken shelter in the house with her parents when they heard a thundering sound from outside and when the father checked he discovered all the animals had cut their ropes and were out of the shed.
“Our father returned in the house but he was not settled, moments later he again went outside to check on the cows before he discovered our brother who had been struck and helplessly crying for help,” explained Ayoti.
The victim was later rushed to Lumakanda hospital where the family accused medics at the facility of not attending to him for close to four hours before he was referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Eldoret where he also spent six hours without being attended to before he succumbed.
“Our brother was seriously injured but despite our efforts to rush him to the hospital to save his life it is disheartening he died without being attended to yet the hospital had already charged us Kshs. 3,500,” said Ann Shikanda, a sister to the deceased.
