United Democratic Party (UDP) presidential candidate on Cyrus Shakhala Khwa Jirongo did not participate in the October 26, repeat presidential elections. By the closure of the exercise at 5pm, Jirongo who is a voter at Lumakanda Township had not turned up to cast his vote.
Jirongo had welcomed the move by Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) to include his name on the ballot and promised to take part in the repeat election.
Source hinted to West Media that the presidential hopeful was held up in some important issues in Nairobi and couldn’t make it to vote.
However the exercise kicked off well in all 159 polling stations within Lugari constituency despite the low turnout that was witnessed. A spot check by West Media in various polling stations revealed that most stations recorded less than 10% voter turnout with clerks and
presiding officers sitting idle in most stations.
According to area returning officer Japheth Lagat the exercise started at 6am and went on smoothly till 5pm.
“We have not witnessed any hiccups since morning everything went on well though there was low turnout but we thank God the exercise has been peaceful,” said Lagat adding that everything had been put in place ready for tallying exercise at the constituency tallying center at Lumakanda Salvation Army Church.
