One person killed while three escaped with serious injuries in an early morning accident that involved three lories at Chimoi bridge along the busy Eldoret – Webuye highway in Matete sub county.
According to one of the survivors, the accident occurred at about 5am after one of the trucks ferrying construction materials from Kenyan coast destined to a neighbouring country failed brakes as it descended towards the bridge.
The driver was unable to control the vehicle before ramming into the back of a second truck that was in front forcing it to lose control and collided head on with a canter that had just crossed the bridge from the opposite direction.
All the three vehicles veered off the road with the two landing in a ditch while the other was trapped on the foot bridge injuring all the occupants.
The injured who included three drivers and a turn-boy of the canter were rescued and rushed to Webuye sub county hospital where the turn-boy was pronounced dead on arrival at the facility.
Speaking to the media at the scene, long distance trucks drivers who normally ply the highway to the neighbouring countries termed the area as a black spot and appealed to Kenya National Highway Authority KENHA to put black spot signs at the area to warn drivers.
They also complained of the breadth of the bridge which they claimed was so narrow for two vehicles to meet over it and appealed for its expansion regretting that many accidents have occurred there due to its size.
