Two people lost their lives in two different incidences in Busia county on Sunday and Monday while two others were injured and taken to hospital.
In the first incidence, a 12-year-old boy died after he was covered by sand he was harvesting at Apegei village in Teso South Sub County in Busia County.
The standard two pupil was harvesting sand in the company of another boy and a girl aged 12 and 13 years respectively on Sunday afternoon when sand fell on him killing him on the spot.
The other boy escaped without injuries while the girl suffered minor injuries.
Locals who rescued the girl and took an hour to retrieve the body of the deceased, have accused the local administration for failing to stop sand harvesting in the area which has led to many locals getting injuries,
“This is not the first time people are being covered by sand here. Many people have been injured but the chiefs do nothing about it,” lamented one of the locals.
They claim the children are paid between twenty to fifty shillings after harvesting the sand which is bought by people from as far as Busia town which is twenty kilometers away.
In the second incidence, a middle age man died on the spot after he was knocked down by a matatu at Mugenya area, a few meters from Nambale town on Monday morning.
The deceased who is a cane cutter was riding his bicycle with his colleague towards Nambale town when they were both run over by the matatu which was also headed to Nambale from Mumias at around six in the morning.
According to Nambale OCS Rolex Nyoka, the driver who later surrendered to the police may have lost visibility due to fog and hit the duo from behind,
“One died on the spot and the other one was seriously injured and was taken to hospital. When you look at the area where the accident occurred, the road was clear and it seems the driver lost visibility due to the fog that was there in the morning.”
