A journey of 47 students of St. Stephens Lwanya girls’ secondary school in Busia County turned tragic after their bus got involved in a road accident at Daraja Mbili area along the Kimilili – Bokoli – Sikata route as several of them sustained injuries.
Kimilili Sub County hospital doctor in charge Hesbon Wafula said that most of them had soft tissue injuries and that thirteen of them had to be referred to the Dreamland, a neighboring hospital for an x ray to be carried out on them.
“One of the students complained of severe stomach ache and we referred her to the Webuye Sub – County hospital for further medication but the rest are in stable condition and have been discharged,” said Dr. Wafula.
Sheila Moraa, a teacher who had accompanied the students on the trip said that the accident was as a result of a tire burst.
She complained that the road has many potholes which may also have caused the unfortunate accident saying they were lucky that no life was lost during the accident.
She disclosed that the students were headed to St. Lukes Kimilili boys high school for a French symposium urging the parents not to be worried.
Area Member of Parliament Suleiman Kasuti Murunga expressed his sympathy for the affected students saying he has talked to the roads cabinet secretary James Macharia regarding renovating the road and he assured him that the road will be renovated soon.
He said it is saddening that the road has caused many deaths saying it was poorly done as the contractor did not erect bumps on it as well as set up road signs and culverts saying the road has so many potholes that have led to many accidents.
Eye witnesses at the scene of the accidents also blamed the many potholes on the road for having catalyzed the accident saying the driver was not conversant with the road hence causing the tire to burst as he was driving along.
