52 students, 6 teachers and 2 support staff at Salvation Army Kolanya Boys High School in Busia have tested positive for Covid-19. Confirming the cases, Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong on Tuesday said the cases were picked from 100 samples only, which were selected for testing randomly.
A team of medical officers has been sent to the school, with the positive cases already placed in isolation. The rest of the school’s fraternity has been quarantined within the school.
Ojaamong said the County’s isolation centres have already handled a total of 2,016 Covid-19 cases, with most of the patients discharged. 2 patients are still under medical care. The Kolanya Covid-19 cases come even as Education CS Prof. George Magoha insists learning won’t be stopped despite rising infections countrywide.
The Governor said so far Busia has reported 1,683 Covid-19 cases out of 75,564 tests, with the first case diagnosed in April 2020. He said out of 63,590 drivers tested, 1,364 tested positive, out of 569 food handlers 10 tested positive. 12 out of 962 healthcare workers tested positive while 152 prisoners out of 778 and 363 out of 5950 community members have tested positive. The tests are being carried out at Alupe KEMRI laboratories, Busia County Referral Hospital and KEMRI CDC Kisumu.
