The government has resorted to use boda boda operators across the country to combat the spread of Coronavirus. Government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna and the Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of ICT and Innovation Jerome Ochieng have termed the operators as a best placed group to help the government win the war on the virus and spread the message on the fight against the pandemic.
Speaking on Wednesday in Busia town during a meeting with boda boda operators’ leaders from Busia County, the two urged the operators to be on the forefront in fighting the virus, “There are over one million boda boda operators in the country and most Kenyans depend on them for their transport. So this is a group which can easily facilitate the spread of Coronavirus or help scale down the infections.”
They, alongside Busia County commissioner Joseph Kanyiri, stressed the need for the operators to embrace a saving culture which will enable them grow economically, “The only way the boda bodas in this country can grow is through saving. Their number across the country is good and if they can put together their hands and start saving then they’ll go very far.”
