Tears flowed freely in Mirembe village Kongoni location, Likuyani Sub County during the burial of two secondary school students who died in a grisly accident that involved two motorbikes within the village.
Several leaders and mourners who attended the service lamented over escalating accidents involving motorbikes and called for urgent measures to curb the menace.
The deceased Collins Andaye and Johnston Kidihu who apart from being neighbors were students of Nasianda and Mapera secondary schools respectively, collided head on while competing for Kshs. 200 and died on the spot.
The area Member of County Assembly Josphat Kititi Mwasame condemned the incident appealing for a legal action against the organizers of the competition that fled the scene and went into hiding immediately after the accident.
“It’s sad we have lost two innocent lives in a funny competition that could be avoided. The lost lives are not worth 200 shillings,” said Mwasame.
Area chief Peter Lugano warned residents against giving motorbikes to school children or any child under the age of 18 and those who don’t have driving licenses.
He said officers from the traffic department were pursuing the incident to ensure owners of the motorbikes and the organizers of the competition that led to the death of the two were held responsible.
“The two boys were in a very funny competition whereby each of them had given out two hundred Kenya Shilling that whoever would reach the marked point first gets the cash. They were riding in opposite directions towards a given point around the Mirembe area. They set off and almost arrived at the same time and they couldn’t control the bikes due to the high speed hence the head on collision, “said a witness
