A 62-year-old man from Munyama village, Munyuki sub location in Lugari sub county committed suicide by hanging himself due to depression after being unable to raise money to cater for his ailing wife’s hospital bill. According to the deceased’s elder brother Mr. Abdallah Sambili, the brother George Samba Sambili was psychologically disturbed following the illness of his wife who had been admitted at a Kakamega hospital after being found with a growth in her stomach that required surgery to remove it.
Abdallah said being just a peasant farmer, his brother couldn’t raise the money required to enable her undergo operation saying the situation never gave him peace as he tried all means to see her treated unsuccessfully. He disclosed that whenever the wife fell sick, his brother looked so stressed. “He was so worried about his wife’s deteriorating health that sometimes he could be found talking to himself and behaving like a mad person and looked sick as well. We took him to hospital where after being assessed, the medics said he behaved like that due to depression and he was put on medication,” explained Abdallah adding that they were shocked by his move to take his life in such a cruel way.
The deceased’s sister Ms. Florence Beisi said her brother had spent the previous day well and took his medicine before he went to bed “I checked on him at about 11 pm and found him deep asleep. She said the body was discovered at about 5 am after one of her nephews woke up to prepare for school and found the door wide open and when he checked into his father’s bedroom he was not there, he woke up the elder brother who continued with the search before he found his body dangling from one of the trees within the compound. Police officers from Lumakanda station visited the scene where the family members requested to be allowed to bury him stating that they had no complaints about his his death.
