Leaders are still mourning the passing on of the second national KNUT vice chairperson Dr. John Wesonga who died after battling with cancer for a long time.
Speaking to West Media, Bungoma East KNUT Executive Secretary Aggrey Murumba Namisi mourned Wesonga as a staunch defender of teachers and would go an extra mile to defend teachers especially any time the government of the day seemed to oppress the teachers.
Namisi who in 2021 contested against the late for the second vice chairperson seat and lost said he will forever miss his counterpart and equal competitor who demonstrated his trade unionism well and knew what he did and that’s why teachers from Mumias Sub County always elected him for believing in his great and full of wisdom leadership.
“My friend Dr. Wesonga was just another great friend and his death has robbed the union a unionist that lived in defending the teachers always and he would go an extra mile to do anything to defend teachers even if he would be arrested that never bothered him no wonder he was always elected,” said Namisi.
Namisi said he will always remember him for criticizing the government during the beginning of the new education system –CBC- where the two were arrested for interfering with training of teachers on CBC in several schools in their regions.
“During CBC training we were arrested together for interfering with training of teachers because we thought the country was not ripe for the CBC system of education that showed he was a believer of education and that will remain in the hearts of many teachers.”
He asked for peace as teachers and KNUT mourn their hero and appealed to the family to accept that death is inevitable.
”I send my heartfelt condolences to the family of my friend during these trying moments and as the teaching fraternity and family of Bungoma East we will stand with the family of our hero unionist.” said Namisi.
