It is a sigh of relief for university students in the country after the university lecturers and staff ended their strike yesterday, Thursday, a strike that started on September 18 2024.
The Cabinet Secretary for Labor Dr. Alfred Mutua says due to discussions between his Ministry and the worker’s union, the strike that disrupted studies in colleges has come to an end.
Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, says that studies are finally being referred to colleges because the talks between them and the unions of lecturers and college staff have borne fruit.
Prof Fred Simiyu barasa the Vice chancellor of Taita Taveta University who is also the chairman of the joint council of public universities argues that there is an understanding that will restore stability in the colleges.
Among the complex issues reached is that due to their 2021/2025 contract, lecturers will now receive a four percent salary increment from July 2023, also with an agreement to implement an increase of seven percent and ten percent according to the grades of those lecturers.
Dr. Constantine Wasonga, Secretary General of the Association of UASU Lecturers confirms that the lecturers are now ready to return to the classroom while Dr. Charles Muhwaya, Secretary General of the union of University workers, says that there is agreement and that there is no strike in universities.
The KUDHEIHA union that represents workers in different sectors through their representative Benson Maina confirmed that they have now found direction to call off the strike.
