Kibabii University, a relatively young institution in Kenya’s higher education landscape, has marked a significant milestone in celebrating its 10th anniversary since receiving its charter in 2015. In an interview on West TV’s Morning Scoop, Prof. Isack Ipara Odeo, the Vice Chancellor of Kibabii University, reflected on the institution’s journey, achievements, and future aspirations. He shared insights into the university’s evolution, its contributions to academia and society, and its strategic vision for the next decade.
The university’s journey began in 2011 as Kibabii University College (KIBUCO), a constituent college of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. Initially, with just 42 staff members, 333 students, and two faculties offering nine programs, KIBUCO faced the daunting challenge of establishing itself as a center of academic excellence. Over the next three years, KIBUCO focused on developing new academic programs, building infrastructure, recruiting qualified staff, and conducting institutional assessments to meet the requirements for university chartering.
In 2015, Kibabii University was granted its charter, marking its transition to a fully-fledged university. This milestone symbolized the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement. Over the past decade, the university has experienced exponential growth, with its student population increasing from 333 to 8,901, and staff numbers rising from 42 to 450, including 100 PhD holders. This growth reflects the university’s ability to attract students and faculty while maintaining high academic standards.
Kibabii University’s philosophy, vision, and mission have been the guiding principles behind its success. The university’s philosophy emphasizes the role of science, technology, and innovation in sustainable development. Its vision is to become a global and dynamic university of excellence in these fields, while its mission focuses on generating, transmitting, and enhancing knowledge through teaching, research, and outreach programs.
To operationalize these ideals, the university has developed strategic objectives, a 2023-2027 strategic plan, and a master plan. These documents outline the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, research, and community engagement. Additionally, the university’s core values—such as integrity, professionalism, and innovation—are embedded in its operations through staff and student induction programs and regular reminders.
Kibabii University has significantly shaped the academic landscape in Bungoma County, Western Kenya, and beyond. By providing access to quality education, the university has empowered thousands of students, many of whom come from underserved communities. Initiatives such as the Needy Students Endowment Program and collaborations with local leaders have ensured that financial constraints do not hinder access to education.
The university has also played a pivotal role in mentoring secondary school students through career mentorship programs and enhancing mathematics education through research projects. Furthermore, its collaborations with stakeholders have led to the development of relevant academic programs, such as the BSc in Cooperatives and Entrepreneurship and the BSc in Nursing, which address local and regional needs.
Kibabii University’s academic programs and research initiatives have made significant contributions to local, regional, and national development. Notable projects include the IDRC-funded initiative to strengthen in-service teacher mentorship in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Sudan, and a KES 45 million consultancy contract with the KCB Foundation to support Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Western Kenya.
The university has also been at the forefront of innovation, as evidenced by the development of the Bagasse Dryer Furnace Utility Model, which offers a sustainable alternative to charcoal. Collaborations with international partners, such as Carbon Footprint Limited and the University of Pittsburgh, have further enhanced the institution’s research capabilities and global reach.
Kibabii University has demonstrated a strong commitment to preserving and promoting indigenous knowledge, local heritage, and cultural identity. Through initiatives such as the Students Cultural Week and the establishment of the Centre for Languages and Cultural Studies, the university has created platforms for celebrating and researching local cultures. The Prof. Ken Walibora Corner and Museum, named after the renowned Kenyan author, stands as a testament to the institution’s dedication to cultural preservation.
Additionally, the university offers courses in literature, Fasihi, and local history, ensuring that students remain connected to their cultural roots. Research in artificial intelligence and the conservation of indigenous knowledge further highlights the institution’s innovative approach to cultural preservation.
Over the past decade, Kibabii University has undertaken significant infrastructural developments to enhance the learning experience. Modern lecture halls, laboratories, a well-equipped library, student hostels, and administrative buildings have transformed the campus into a state-of-the-art institution. The construction of a sports complex, the Kibabii University ICT Hub (KICTH), and a student center has further enriched the campus environment.
The university has also prioritized sustainability in its infrastructure projects. By incorporating green building technologies, renewable energy sources, and waste recycling initiatives, Kibabii University has set an example for sustainable development in higher education.
Kibabii University’s architectural designs, influenced by the concept of curves, reflect a harmonious blend of modernity and cultural preservation. The campus environment, characterized by the preservation and planting of indigenous trees, serves as a reminder of the institution’s commitment to environmental conservation and cultural heritage.
As Kibabii University looks to the future, it has outlined several strategic goals to maintain its trajectory of excellence. These include the construction of the School of Nursing Complex, the expansion of academic programs, and the establishment of the College of Health Sciences. The university also aims to strengthen global partnerships, enhance research collaborations, and improve performance efficiency.
Kibabii University’s 10-year journey is a testament to its resilience, innovation, and commitment to academic excellence. By staying true to its vision and mission, the institution has not only transformed the lives of its students but also contributed to the socio-economic development of Bungoma County and the wider Western Kenya region. As it embarks on the next decade, Kibabii University is poised to achieve even greater heights, solidifying its position as a global leader in science, technology, and innovation.
In the words of Prof. Isack Ipara Odeo, “Being number one is not the issue; the issue is staying there.” With its strategic vision and unwavering dedication, Kibabii University is well on its way to maintaining its legacy of excellence for generations to come.
In November 2024, Kibabii University was ranked 5th overall in Kenya and 46th in Africa for academic excellence. In mid-March 2025, it was awarded as the top university in the public service institution category. These achievements underscore Kibabii University’s remarkable accomplishments and its ambitious plans for the future.
