A somber mood has engulfed Mawa village, Lwandeti location in Matete, Kakamega County after a 74 year old granny committed suicide by throwing herself into a borehole in the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Confirming the incident, Maturu sub location assistant chief Festus Mukechi said the deceased Ruth Mulongo left the house at about 1:00am and her daughter thought she was going to answer to a call of nature and return but she never came back.
The daughter became more worried after the mother took too long to come back and decided to go and see what might have happened.
The local administrator said the daughter looked outside and even in the toilet but the mother was nowhere to be seen.
She decided to go and inform her brother, however as she walked towards her brother’s house she heard her mother screaming from the borehole.
The daughter raised an alarm that attracted tens of villagers who rushed to the scene but their efforts to save her life were fruitless as they lacked equipment to save her.
Mukechi said the reason that led the granny to take her life in such a cruel way has not been established.
However, speaking to West media on condition of anonymity, a family member said the granny who was ailing has been engaging in regular feud with one of her sons over land and it could be the reason behind her committing suicide.
Police officers from Matete removed the body and took it to Chebaiywa mortuary in the neighbouring Uasin Gishu County as they launched investigation into the incident.
