A form three student at Chekalini secondary school in Lugari sub county died on Sunday after drowning in Kipkaren river at Mwivona village, Chekalini location.
According to the deceased’s uncle Mr. Christopher Mahelo , his nephew Victor Amakove together with his friends had gone fishing in the river before the tragedy occurred Sunday afternoon.
He said after several hours of fishing , the nephew decided to swim in the river before he was overwhelmed by the water and drowned.
Efforts by his friends to rescue him were futile as they lacked swimming skills and helplessly watched as he drowned.
They however rushed to inform neighbours and family members who sought services of local divers to try and retrieve the body in vain.
The family is now appealing to both the national and county government of Kakamega to help it get expert divers who will help to find and retrieve the body from the river.
