Apart from topping in 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) at St. Teresa primary, Immaculate Wafula has nothing to celebrate following grinding poverty that has engulfed his family.
The pupil who scored 400 marks has lost hope of pursuing her education and realizes her career dream as her parents cannot afford to raise her secondary school fees as well as cater for her other siblings.
Immaculate who wants to be a neurosurgeon has been living under guardianship of one of the teachers at the school and reveals that her father Lucas Wafula is a casual laborer and has been struggling to see them through.
The student who scored 400 marks is now appealing to well-wishers to assist her realize her dream of joining St. Bridget Girls High School Kiminini.
The father who lives on a 0.01 an acre piece of land concurred with the daughter arguing that faced with the burden of ensuring that his other children also gained education he may not afford to take Immaculate through secondary education.
The head teacher of St. Teresa primary school, Mrs. Catherine Sisenda, where Immaculate sat for the exams, appealed to the local leaders and well-wishers to support the bright girl and others who performed marvelously and come from humble backgrounds to pursue their education.
She said after seeing her potentiality in education one of the female teachers in the school took her and has been her guardian since standard four until she sat her examinations.
“Immaculate was a very enduring student who conquered all hurdles to excel,” she said, adding that such talent should not be wasted.
However, Mrs. Sisenda has thanked the 2021 class for registering sterling performance in their KCPE examinations with over 40 candidates out of 147 who sat the examinations at the school scoring 300 marks and above.
The school has over 100 candidates who scored above the 250 pass mark with our top candidate managing 400 marks,” said the head teacher.
Mrs. Sisenda revealed that improved results had been registered following cordial relationships between parents, pupils and teachers.
