A primary school pupil died on the spot Wednesday evening after he was run over by a cane tractor at Otiende area along Soy – Muriola road in Soy sub location, Likuyani Sub County, Kakamega County.
Confirming the incident, Likuyani location chief Bonivanture Lugado said the grade five pupil at St. Monica primary school was heading home from school in company of other pupils when the tragedy occurred.
He said the driver of the tractor was speeding before he lost control and ran over the boy killing him on the spot as his colleagues managed to escape without injuries.
The local administrator said after the incident the driver jumped from the tractor and fled the scene leaving the tractor parked in the middle of the road.
Angry residents thronged the scene of the accident and attempted to set the tractor on fire but their efforts were thwarted by police officers.
The tractor was later towed to Matunda police station as investigations into the incident were launched.
Lugado has appealed to all drivers to strictly adhere to the traffic rules and be mindful of other road users to avoid unnecessary accidents.
