Counties in the former Western province and Trans Nzoia are still lagging behind when it comes to legal education institutions, after the latest publication of licensed legal education institutions revealed the region doesn’t have an institution licensed to tutor law classes. The region boosts of reputable universities, led by Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and Kibabii University, however, none have even applied for a legal education teaching license at the moment.
In a December 15th publication, the Council of Legal Education said only two institutions are new applicants for a license, Mount Kenya University which seeks to offer Masters in Law and whose application is awaiting inspection by the Council and Kenya School of law seeking a Diploma in Law Programme. The Council has listed the licensed institutions, with the University licensed to offer Masters in Law programme being Strathmore University, valid until November 2024.
Institutions licensed to provide Bachelor of Laws programme are Africa Nazarene University, Chuka University, Moi University, University of Nairobi-School of Law Parklands Campus, whose licenses run till 10th December 2025. Umma University, whose license is valid until 24th September 2025. Kisii University School of Law, University of Embu School of Law, whose licenses are valid until 16th April 2024. Daystar University School of Law-Valley Road Campus, Mount Kenya University School of Law-Parklands Campus, University of Nairobi School of Law-Kisumu Campus, with licenses valid until 31st July 2023.
Kenyatta University School of Law-Parklands Campus, whose license is valid till 14th December 2021. Riara University School of Law, Strathmore University School of Law with licenses valid until 9th November 2021. Catholic University of Eastern Africa School of Law, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology-Karen Campus, with licenses valid until 16th September 2021. Egerton University School of Law has a license valid until 12th February 2021, University of Nairobi School of Law-Mombasa Campus has a valid license active until 19th January 2021.
Institutions offering Diploma in Law programme include Kenya Institute of Management whose license is valid till 19th November 2024, Kisii University School of Law with a license valid till 16th April 2024, and Mount Kenya University School of Law-Parklands Campus’ license running till 6th November 2023.
