Kenyans may get relief from paying the cost of electricity and economically boosted by 2034 if the project to build a nuclear power plant is completed in Kilifi County.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency – Nupea, Mr. Justus Wabuyabo, the Kenyan government is preparing to build the plant in Kilifi County at a cost of 500 billion shillings in collaboration with the International Nuclear Energy Agency.
Wabuyabo speaking in an exclusive interview with West FM and West TV, he said that plans to start the construction are already underway at various levels where the project is expected to be launched in 2027 and completed in 2034.
He additionally argued that the 1000 megawatts of electricity that will be produced at the plant will be directed to the main electricity plant in the country – the national grid and distributed throughout the country to increase the amount of electricity available in the country, thus reducing the cost of electricity in the country.
The cost of the nuclear project will be paid for between 17 and 20 years from taxpayers’ money while the plant is expected to generate electricity for the next 80 years.
