A suspected thief was burnt beyond recognition by an irate mob after he was found in possession of stolen maize in Angayu village, Chekalini location in Lugari Sub County.
Confirming the incident, Lugari Sub County Police Commander Bernard Ngungu said the deceased was found with about 75kg of dry maize suspected to have been stolen from Mrs. Miriam Etanga’s compound in the neighbouring Shivembe village.
It’s alleged on seeing the crowd of residents storm his compound the suspect fled away as the crowd ran after him before turning against one of them cutting his hand.
The incident angered the crowd which managed to catch him before descending upon him with all manner of crude weapon and later dosed him with petrol and set him ablaze
Ngungu said on receiving the information his officer rushed to the scene to rescue him but they found him already burnt beyond recognition.
The police boss warned that cases of mob justice will not be tolerated and called on the residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and instead advised them to hand all suspects to police for appropriate legal action to be taken against them.
The body was removed from the scene by officers from Lumakanda police station and taken to Kimbilio Funeral Home in the neighbouring Uasin Gishu County as they launched investigations into the incident.
