A suspected sugarcane thief was shot and killed by a police officer after allegedly attacking Marakusi location chief Edith Ayodi Khagali with a machete while on duty in Mugumu village, Marakusi sub location, Lugari Sub County.
Confirming the incident Lugari Sub County police Commander Bernard Ngungu said the chief received a report from one of the residents complaining of someone who had stolen sugarcane from his farm.
He said the chief went and managed to trace the thief where he discovered assorted stolen items in his house before alerting the officer in charge of Panpaper police station who rushed to the scene.
On reaching the compound, the officer together with the suspect’s father and another family member entered the house to search for alleged stolen property but immediately they entered the house, the suspect locked them inside before he took a machete and charged towards the chief who was standing outside with intention of cutting her.
It forced the chief to run for her life crying for help as the suspect ran after her.
The officer who had been locked inside the house was forced to jump through the window to go and rescue the chief and despite shooting twice in the air to worn the suspect he ignored and instead turned against the officer with intention to attack him with the machete forcing the officer to shoot and killed him on the spot.
Ngungu said an assortment of stolen property was recovered from the suspect’s house.
The body was removed from the scene by officers from Lumakanda police station and taken to Webuye mortuary as the DCI department launched investigations into the incident.
