A cargo train was involved in an accident at Kiwanja Ndege area in Lugari Sub County Tuesday evening, spilling goods on transit.
According to Lugari Sub County Police Commander Bernard Ngungu, nine out of the ten containers derailed leading to the accident.
He said the train was ferrying wheat from Kenyan coast to a neighbouring country when the accident occurred.
He said following the incident, hundreds of residents living near the railway line in the area thronged the scene with an intention of looting the spilled wheat but a quick intervention by police officers escorting the train saved it.
The residents engaged the officers in a running battle before they received reinforcement from officers from Lumakanda police station.
No fatalities were reported from the scene.
