19 people died in a road accident involving several vehicles at Kamukuywa bridge along the Webuye Kitale road on Monday night. According to Bungoma North OCPD Eliud Okello, a matatu which was heading to Webuye rammed into a tractor which was ferrying sugarcane at the bridge. Several other vehicles which were following the matatu were involved in the road accident, raising the number of casualties. Five vehicles were involved in the accident, and on Tuesday, the number of casualties had risen to 19 people after 14 died on Monday.
Residents have raised concerns over the number of accidents that take place at the spot, with one eyewitness lamenting that every year an accident has to happen, saying prayers haven’t produced the desired effects, “Sometimes one chooses to alight a matatu before he or she approaches this spot because they fear an accident might happen,” he said.
