As the mass voter registration by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) continues, Langata constituency ODM aspirants have raised their concern over voters’ importation in their constituency. Led by Mr. Ahmed Papa, who is eyeing the Member of Parliament seat, they condemned strongly the alleged importation of voters in Langata constituency.
“IEBC is failing when it comes to this malpractice of importing voters to Langata constituency. There is an unprecedented mass voter transfer that is going on, with the aim being to replace the bonafide electorate at the constituency IEBC offices. What is even more alarming is that these voters are being sourced, transported, imported and registered along ethnic lines,’’ said Ahmed Papa.
Mr Ahmed added that the figures in Langata sharply contrast with those IEBC is releasing to the public since the importation rate is unusually high and not in sync with local demographics.
As of January 16th 2017, the total number of registered voters in Langata’s 34 polling stations stood at 96,698 voters and presently the number has risen to 134,731 voters, an extraordinary increase of approximately 39%.
“We have investigated the matter and found that these new voters have already transferred their votes from several polling stations in the Rift Valley region,” he said.
Salma Ochieng who is also eyeing the MCA seat in Mugamoini ward said they have given IEBC three days to desist from the behavior, failure to do so will force them to mobilize their supporters to demonstrate.
“We shall permanently station a considerable number of our supporters at all Langata IEBC constituency offices to continue monitoring ongoing voter fraud,” she said.
Mr. Ahmed warned the owners of public service vehicles in Nairobi such as City Hoppa, Embasavva Sacco among others to desist from hiring out their vehicles
