Former Kilifi Governor, Amason Jeffah Kingi is the Speaker of the Senate after garnering 46 votes of the total 46 votes cast.
This comes after some of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Senators walked out of the Senate Chamber when the name of their candidate Kalonzo Musyoka -Wiper leader was not among the names of the contestants since he had withdrawn from the race.
For a Speaker to be declared a winner, one should get two thirds of the votes cast, in this case Kingi needed 45 votes out of the 67 votes of the whole house therefore by getting all the 46 votes cast therefore he met the threshold of two thirds majority.
He won in the first round and if at all he would not have got the 45 votes, he was to face off with the second contestant to get the winner.
Kingi was sworn in immediately by the clerk of the Senate Jeremia Nyegenye and assumed his role.
Kilifi Senator Madzayo Stewart Mwachiru withdrew from the race of Deputy Speaker of the Senate, therefore Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi was elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker.
Kingi will preside over the 4th Senate in the 13th Parliament.
Other contestants were; Isaac Aluochier Polo, George Njoroge Kuria, George Bush, Beatrice Kathomi and Fredrick Karuri Muchiri who got no votes.
