A one day old baby boy was rescued after he was found dumped in a maize plantation in Otiende village, Soy sub location Likuyani sub county.
Confirming the incident, acting Likuyani location chief Peter Lugano said the infant was heard crying from the farm by a passersby who raised alarm attracting attention of the villagers.
He said the residents cleaned the baby who had been dumped, carefully tied the umbilical cord and dressed him warmly before taking him to Likuyani sub county hospital.
The local administrator said the case has been recorded at Likuyani police station and the officers have launched an investigation to trace the biological mother of the baby in order to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We are appealing to anyone with information about the runaway mother to volunteer information to security officers,” said Lugano.
Speaking to the media, a medical officer at the hospital who sought anonymity said the newborn was out of danger after undergoing the necessary medical tests to confirm his health status.
“He is stable and out of danger. Abandoned babies when they are brought to hospital undergo several medical tests to check their health status, and if they are unwell, we treat them until they are clinically stable and well. We then hand them to relevant officers who take the several steps to make sure the child is placed in a children’s home,” said the officer.
The officer appealed to mothers to desist from dumping their babies, calling on them to embrace family planning to avoid such incidences or take the babies to children homes instead of killing or dumping them.
She said such inhumane actions jeopardize lives of innocent children, but proposed they should have compassion by seeking assistance from community support services.
