Crops and houses were destroyed by angry residents in a revenge mission following the murder of a middle aged man by his friend in Munyuki village, Lumakanda location Lugari Sub County.
According to Munyuki Sub location senior village elder Mr. Festo Jandi, the residents were retaliating following the murder of Julius Amugari alias Winji by his friend Brian Musirwa following a misunderstanding.
The deceased was hit by the suspect using a stone and was rushed to Kakamega County Referral Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.
“The situation angered residents who destroyed crops and torched a house belonging to Martha Musirwa, mother to the suspect and also demolished and flattened the suspect’s house as they bayed for his blood forcing him to seek safety in the neighbouring Mukuva village where police saved him,” said Mr. Jandi.
Speaking to West Media from his hiding in Mukuva village, the suspect said he never intended to commit murder.
“I accidentally hit him with a stone in self-defense after misunderstanding thus injuring him. I didn’t mean to kill him,” he said.
Confirming the incident, Lumakanda chief Celestine Asige revealed that investigation was ongoing.
“Police should be allowed to handle the matter and ensure justice is served. Residents should not take law into their hands since it destroys evidence and complicate cases.” Asige noted.
