The Athletics Kenya for Central Rift region has conducted the pre-trials for the World under-20 championships an event which was conducted at Eliud Kipchoge sports complex in Kapsabet Nandi County in preparation ahead of the championships slated for July.
Speaking to journalists in Kapsabet, Athletics Kenya Chair for Nairobi region Mr Barnabas Korir said the trials are meant for the preparation ahead of the world under 20 championships saying the trials will be conducted in all regions.
“From Central Rift, the pre-trials will be held in Western, South Rift, Nyanza South, Nyanza North and Nairobi with the last event scheduled to be held in Central region in June,”he added.
Korir cited that the event brought together young athletes from across North Rift region in Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Baringo counties whom their focus is the 17th-22nd August championships that will be held at the Moi International Sports Center Kasarani.
The AK chair revealed that as an athletic Kenya, their target is to get at least twenty five athletes from each region to join those who had been identified during the National pre-trials held last year.
He affirmed that Covid-19 pandemic has greatly affected the athletics fraternity in terms of proper preparations not only in Central Rift but to the entire country thus there is need for serious preparations.
