Residents of Lwandet in Matete sub county, Kakamega county were left in shock after a body believed to be of a one year old baby was found dumped by the roadside few meters from the busy Eldoret – Webuye highway.
Confirming the incident, Matete District Administration Police Commander (DAPC) Mr. James Arama said the body was found wrapped in a carton box near Lwandet junction which also acts as Matatu stage.
Mr. Arama said that residents became suspicious after the carton had laid there for several hours without anybody claiming its ownership.
He said when they opened it they were mesmerized to get a baby corpse before they alerted police officers who later removed it to Webuye sub county hospital mortuary for postmortem as they launched investigation into the incident.
The DAPC said it has not been established whether the corpse was dropped from a vehicle or someone carried it from elsewhere and dumped it there.
He added that only postmortem report will be able to establish whether the baby was strangled to death or succumbed to illness.
Arama has appealed to anyone who might have information about the incident to volunteer it to police so that a legal action can be taken against the suspect.
