After a long waiting period, filled with political narratives, the Building Bridges Initiative taskforce is finally ready to present its report to President Uhuru Kenyatta. The taskforce, which was formed by President Kenyatta and former premier Rails Odinga after the infamous handshake to provide a way forward towards peace and stability had gone around Kenya to collect views from Kenyans on different issues including governance and development.
According to joint secretaries Amb. Martin Kimani and Paul Mwangi, the taskforce had its last formal meeting on Wednesday, and they have officially communicated to the Office of the President that the report is ready to be handed over at first opportunity, “They have received word that the event will be scheduled at the first available opportunity,” read a statement from the BBI team.
The report takes into account views from different Kenyans from all Counties, professional bodies, commissions, religious leaders, elected leaders among others.
“Having heard how urgently Kenyans seek positive and far-reaching change, the taskforce believes that Kenya can utilize this auspicious moment to build the bonds between us that will become a strong foundation for an inclusive, fair and prosperous nation,” read the statement. Several leaders have urged Kenyans to wait for the BBI report and ignore the much maligned Punguza Mizigo Bill fronted by Thirdway Alliance party. However, some have come out to claim it’s tailored towards creating leadership positions and space for constitutional amendments.
