Bob Collymore will be laid to rest on Tuesday in a private ceremony involving family and close friends. Speaking at a press address hours after the CEO’s demise on Monday, Safaricom chairman board chairman Nicholas Nganga said a memorial service will be held later this week, either on Thursday or Friday, for all those who knew or cared for Collymore. The Safaricom CEO succumbed to Leukemia on Monday morning at his home in Nairobi. He had been undergoing treatment in Kenya, after coming back from specialized treatment in the UK in 2018.
Nganga also pointed out that the Company will be giving the way forward in the next 24 hours after a board meeting, and that the succession issue was already brought up. “The board was aware that sooner or later we needed to organize a succession for Bob, in any case, his contract was due to end next month,” he said. The chairman said Bob fought cancer with great fortitude and courage.
Former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph said it was fortunate to have Collymore at the helm of the Company. “We have been very lucky that Bob understood what Safaricom was all about, the DNA of Safaricom, and took it to another level,” he said.
