Transport activities along Lwandeti – Nzoia road were paralyzed after boda boda riders demonstrated and dug trenches lamenting the poor state of the road. Defying government’s directives to observe social distancing the riders crowded the road as early as 8:00am on Monday armed with hoes and spades and disrupted transport activities along the busy road which links Lwandeti market in Lugari Sub-county of Kakamega County to
Naitiri in the neighboring Tongaren sub county in Bungoma County.
They lamented the poor state of a section of the road stretching from Mukhuyu to Lwandeti market arguing the the road had been rehabilitated and well graveled on Lugari ward side while ignoring the Chekalini and Lwandeti wards side. “Lugari ward MCA Musa Makhapila was always around to supervise the work that was being done on his side, and it was well done but on our side our MCA Mr. John Ngome was nowhere to be seen, and a shoddy work was done, ” said one rider.
They said transport along the road especially near Mayoyo bridge had become almost impassable and that they had witnessed many accidents at that section of the road. They accused an Asian businessman who owns a quarry at Manyonyi saying his tipper-trucks were greatly contributing to the poor condition of the road. The operators planted tree stems and seedlings on the road, disrupting both motor and human traffic by digging
huge trenches across the road.
They said that despite presenting their complaints to the local leaders no step has been taken forcing them to resort to demonstrations as the only way to pass their grievances. “All we demand is for the whole road to be well gravelled,” they said, vowing to continue with demonstration until their grievances were addressed.
