The Webuye boda boda leadership led by Mr. Andrew Kiveu has criticised a section of Bungoma MCAs who were opposed to the recruitment of village administrators saying the matter may deny youths employment opportunities. The riders have come out vehemently and asked for what they terms their fair share of the County cake, saying they also give taxes and should be considered. They’ve said most of them have academic qualifications but they only ride the motorbikes because they have no other option. Kiveu said most of them have applied for the positions and applied the county government led by governor Wycliffe Wangamati through the service board to atleast allocate them one slot in every word just the same way the teachers have been given chances in Wangamati administration.
They’ve also urged the County government to construct boda boda sheds at every stage to cushion them from harsh weather conditions. “We pay taxes like every other Kenyan but unfortunately we don’t have sheds where we can work from and most of the times we rest under trees,” said Kiveu.
However, mwalimu Protus Lumonje who is a politician from Sitikho ward in Webuye West constituency, and a regular motorbike user said the boda boda sector is very key in terms of job creation and the growth of the economy. He said the government should engage the riders better in terms of development. Lumonje though appealed to boda boda riders to be careful in order to avoid accidents especially during the festive period. They were speaking at Maraka ward in Webuye East constituency during the homecoming of Andrew Kiveu who was elected to replace the outgoing chairman of the Webuye boda boda operators Mr. Milton Maloba.
