More proposals have been presented to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce as they look to complete their fact-finding mission and report before October when they’ll present the final report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The 14-member task force which was formed after the handshake between President Kenyatta and Raila was tasked with evaluating challenges Kenya faces towards building bridges and coming up with lasting solutions. It was also tasked with outlining policy, reform proposals and implementation modalities for the outlined challenges.
So far, the team has collected views from at least 30 Counties and from other governance and rights groups with a view of coming up with solutions, proposals and different views to boost Kenya’s unity and governance. On Thursday, led by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji, they received proposals from different opinion makers, including Speaker Justin Muturi and former chair of the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC) Yash Pal Ghai.
Speaker Muturi underscored the importance of the election process review, angling towards a system where it’s not winner-takes-all. He also affirmed the importance of a review to ensure the gender rule is implemented. On his part, Yash Ghai reiterated the importance of finding a governance system that embraces the country’s diversity. He lauded the effect devolution has had in making Kenyans feel they haven’t been left out in anything, “We could do with a greater review of devolved systems, I think there is a lot of potential but I think we can build on that,” he said.
