In a significant move to improve infrastructure and spur economic growth, Bungoma County, in partnership with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), has launched a Ksh 90 million electricity installation project that will benefit all 45 wards across the county.
The ambitious project, unveiled by Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka during a ceremony in Kongoli and Matoni, aims to provide reliable power to a wide range of essential facilities, including schools, factories, and security installations. Governor Lusaka highlighted the immense potential of the project to transform the county’s economic landscape, enhance educational standards, and improve safety for residents.
Powering Education, Industry, and Security
At the heart of the project is a commitment to uplifting key sectors in the county. Governor Lusaka emphasized that this initiative will ensure schools are adequately powered for modern learning, factories are equipped to operate efficiently, and security facilities are fully operational, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
“This project is more than just about electricity—it is about creating an environment that fosters educational advancement, supports industrial growth, and strengthens the security of our communities,” said Governor Lusaka.
A Joint Effort for Lasting Impact
The Ksh 90 million funding for the project has been equally contributed by both the Bungoma County Government and REREC, with each party investing Ksh 45 million. This collaborative funding model not only ensures the project’s success but also reflects a strong partnership between the county and national government agencies working towards a common goal of economic empowerment and sustainable development.
The project aligns with Bungoma County’s strategic vision of driving industrial growth, improving service delivery, and uplifting the livelihoods of its residents. With reliable electricity, entrepreneurs will be better positioned to expand their businesses, and schools will have the resources they need to provide quality education.
Phase One: A Step Towards Broader Transformation
The first phase of the project will directly benefit around 580 users, primarily focusing on essential public services, such as schools, local factories, and security stations. This initial phase sets the stage for further expansion and serves as a catalyst for broader social and economic development in the region.
As the project progresses, it is expected to unlock new opportunities for business, improve healthcare services, and boost overall community well-being. The reliable power supply is anticipated to catalyze growth in local industries, such as agribusiness, manufacturing, and trade.
Call for Protection and Sustainability
Governor Lusaka also took the opportunity to appeal to the local community to protect the newly installed infrastructure, ensuring that it remains in good condition for future generations. He called for collective responsibility in maintaining the power installations to ensure their long-term sustainability.
Additionally, the governor encouraged local entrepreneurs to take advantage of available trade loans and harness the opportunities created by improved access to electricity.
“The power supply is just the beginning,” Governor Lusaka said. “We now need to focus on using these new opportunities to enhance the economic potential of Bungoma and create sustainable livelihoods for all.”
