Bungoma County has pledged to provide free medical services to all persons living with disabilities (PLWDs) in its public health facilities. The announcement was made by Governor Kenneth Lusaka during the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) celebrations at the Uwanja Ndege Grounds in Kanduyi. The event was also graced by Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Alfred Mutua, who supported the initiative.
Governor Lusaka expressed his administration’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the lives of PLWDs in Bungoma. “Our commitment to empowering persons with disabilities remains unwavering,” said Governor Lusaka. He also revealed that, by next week, the county’s disability policy will be finalized and signed into law, ensuring that the needs of persons with disabilities are fully integrated into the county’s services.
As part of this commitment, Governor Lusaka presented 100 wheelchairs to beneficiaries across the county. The donation will improve mobility for many individuals who struggle with physical challenges. Additionally, he donated game kits to the teams representing Bungoma in the recent Paralympic Games, further promoting sports and inclusivity for PLWDs.
This initiative is part of a broader county strategy aimed at improving healthcare access and fostering social inclusion for persons with disabilities. With free medical services and the finalization of the disability policy, Bungoma is taking significant steps to ensure that PLWDs are not left behind in the county’s development agenda.
