Wabwoba Mukhamule Walinywa, a political activist, has accused the county government of rampant corruption being done in the County, in the name of initiating projects including the chicken slaughter house in Chwele.
He said it is shameful to see the county government look for consultants to assist in the search for experts who will manage the slaughterhouse, as was published in one of the daily newspapers, terming it a waste of taxpayer’s money. He said it’s a clear indication the County government began the project without plans.
“As we continue with a government that doesn’t have plans, it will bring more poverty to people than what they expected after voting in Lusaka as the governor. I urge Lusaka to come out over the Chwele slaughter house. Why are we using some more money to look for consultants; look for people who will manage and run the factory and yet the governor already said that there is a ready market?” asserted Wabwoba.
Mukhamule added that up to now the project has never been completed despite the county government pumping in millions of money. He urged the governor of Bungoma County Ken Lusaka to come out clearly and explain to Bungoma residents how far the project is doing.
“The county government has used more money in the construction of this slaughter house but the funny thing is that it’s still being constructed and sometimes back we heard that it began operations when the governor launched it in August, so what is what? We are just fed up with the corruption that is in the county government of Bungoma,” he said.
During the launch Lusaka promised residents that the factory will employ more than 700 youths, women and elderly persons, he, however, urged them to rear more fowls in order to get cash from the factory that will help eradicate poverty.
He also said that the factory will handle 3,000 birds per day and will be run by one dealer that operates and distributes chicken meat countrywide. An issue which brings a lot of uncertainty because everyone wonders where the chicken will be found since the county government in the first place never encouraged or provided awareness to people on the rearing of fowls.
Lusaka cited that the county government used Kshs. 25 million in the project while the national government put Kshs. 15 million.
To some, it brings to mind the wheelbarrows that were purchased at an abnormal price of over than Kshs 109, 000 per wheelbarrow and the hooks that brought controversies about the price that were purchased, where the governor himself came out and defended the purchase of the above and said that the wheelbarrow is made of non-carcinogenic materials that cannot contaminate meat same as the hooks.
Therefore Mukhamule termed the slaughterhouse project as a way of swindling the common mwananchi’s money where he cited that since it was launched nothing has been done there.
