The governor of Bungoma County Kenneth Lusaka and his deputy Hillary Chongwony visited Kapsokwony Boys High School in Mt. Elgon in order to offer relief after their dormitory was razed down by unknown people on Monday 11th of July when the students were in their classes studying during the night preps.
The Bungoma County Government donated property worth Ksh. 1.2M to the affected students.
Two hundred and nine students were affected by the inferno that resulted in property worth millions of shillings destroyed, in what has been referred by some as an arson attack.
The governor expressed his concern over the fact that the school’s dormitory had been burned down not only once, but twice in the past couple of years.
The governor said he was also disturbed by the fact that nearly as many schools have been burnt down by this time of the year as compared to all of the school that got razed down in the whole of last year.
He explained that despite the fact that the dormitory was burnt down by unknown people, it is very possible that the students, teachers, parents and even the residents living around the school could have knowledge about the assailants.
He asked the school community to help in investigations to ensure the culprits are brought to book adding that the week will not come to a close without the perpetrators being known and arrested.
The Governor and his deputy donated 207 boxes, mattresses, towels and mosquito nets while the Red Cross Foundation donated 209 water bottles.
He also encouraged the students to know where there future lies so that they don’t lose track of what brought them to school and focus on the goal by avoiding unnecessary distractions and studying extra hard to achieve their dreams.
The Bungoma County deputy governor Hillary Chongwony who is also an old boy of the school when he visited the school early on had promised that the County government will donate blankets and mattresses to the affected students.
He added that as County Government, “We want to bring more development to the community and schools infrastructure instead of coming to salvage arson destruction time and again.”
