Bungoma County government has been urged to prioritize the operationalization of its milk processing plant to guarantee a ready market for local dairy farmers. This call was made by West Bukusu Member of the County Assembly, Job Mukoyandali, following the distribution of twelve cows to various farmer groups in his ward.
Mukoyandali emphasized that while the county government’s efforts, such as the distribution of livestock to local farmers, are commendable, there is a critical need to ensure a sustainable market for the milk produced. He expressed confidence in the leadership of Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka, recalling the success of Kitinda Dairy, which once supported many local farmers. Mukoyandali urged the County government to revive the plant to help farmers get consistent returns from their dairy farming activities.
Hon. Mukoyandali also highlighted other upcoming projects to benefit local farmers, including goat and chicken rearing initiatives. His focus is clear: to alleviate poverty in his ward by empowering residents with sustainable farming ventures.
Bungoma County’s Chief Officer for Livestock, Andrew Musungu, also weighed in on the matter, noting that the ongoing cow distribution project spearheaded by Governor Lusaka aims to foster self-sufficiency within the community. He reassured farmers that they would be supported in managing their livestock, with oversight from ward livestock development officers to prevent the quick sale of cows at undervalued prices.
Musungu further revealed that he is working alongside the County’s finance chief officer to draft a concept paper for the operationalization of the Webuye-based milk plant. The goal is to provide a long-term solution for dairy farmers by establishing a stable, local market for their products.
Farmers who have already received cows as part of the project expressed their excitement and satisfaction, stating their commitment to caring for the animals and ensuring they breed for future benefits. The groups involved believe the initiative will have a significant impact on their livelihoods, ensuring sustainable growth in dairy farming.
