Bungoma County Government, in collaboration with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), has launched a transformative electrification project. The initiative, centered around the newly established Bumula Energy Center, aims to connect over 5,400 households to the power grid, marking a major milestone in the region’s development.
The project was officially kicked off with a ceremonial pole installation in Lunakwe, led by the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. Opiyo Wandayo. In his speech, the CS highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in accelerating rural electrification and expressed confidence in the positive impact this initiative will have on local communities.
Governor Kenneth Lusaka, who has been instrumental in the project’s progress, called it a game-changer for Bungoma residents. “During my first term, we secured four and a half acres of land in Bumula, paving the way for the establishment of this vital energy center,” Governor Lusaka explained. “With an investment of KSh 260 million from REREC, we are ensuring that households in even the most remote areas gain access to electricity.”
He further emphasized his administration’s focus on optimizing transformer use across all 45 wards, ensuring that electricity reaches as many homes and businesses as possible. “This project is about more than just providing power. It’s about unlocking economic opportunities, improving education, and enhancing the quality of life for our people,” Lusaka added.
The rural electrification initiative is expected to fuel economic growth, open up new business prospects, and significantly improve living standards for the Bungoma community, positioning the county for a brighter future.
