As the schools reopening date draws closer, many schools may not be in a position to accommodate students, pupils and at the same time maintain the regulations put up by the Ministry of Health to fight the spread of Covid-19 due to lack of enough infrastructure.
According to Bungoma East KNUT secretary general Aggrey Murumba Namisi, he has toured many schools in Webuye East and West sub counties and many schools are not ready for reopening since they don’t have enough classrooms, toilets and water points as required.
Speaking in Webuye, Namisi said he was dismayed, that the Education Ministry failed to remit billions of shillings to schools as pledged. He said Covid-19 has caused adverse effects, and it will be hard for teachers to force students to follow the regulations in the current school environments.
He has appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene and ensure the funds are sent to schools as promised, to improve infrastructure and preparedness.
“The number of students in some schools like Mukhuyu, Webuye ACK, St. Joseph and many others is overwhelming and with the infrastructure I have seen around, it will be hard for teachers to maintain Covid-19 regulations as its needed. The President must intervene as quickly as possible,” he stated.
Namisi has urged teachers and parents to be keen and not to use a lot of money during this Christmas period and instead set aside money for school fees.
