Bungoma County Governor Kenneth Lusaka has called for the integration of culture and sports as a strategic approach to enhance local eco-tourism, emphasizing the potential for cultural festivals to drive both unity and economic growth.
Speaking at the Kapkugo Festival celebrations at Mt. Elgon, Governor Lusaka highlighted the role of such events in preserving traditions while contributing to local tourism. “Events like this are more than just celebrations. They foster unity, preserve our treasured traditions, and contribute to local economic growth through cultural tourism,” Lusaka said, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to promoting Bungoma’s rich cultural heritage.
The festival, a three-day event celebrating the vibrant traditions of the region, was graced by Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who assured attendees that the Sports Ministry would expedite the completion of the Masinde Muliro Kanduyi Stadium. Murkomen noted that the stadium would play a pivotal role in sports development and community empowerment.
Dignitaries including Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, other governors, and principal secretaries were in attendance. They were treated to a showcase of traditional music, dance, cuisine, and the opportunity to learn about the region’s rich history and culture.
Governor Lusaka further committed to supporting cultural programs, announcing plans to allocate an annual budget for cultural initiatives and the establishment of cultural centers across the county. This initiative aims to empower local communities and preserve Bungoma’s traditions for future generations.
